Teens seem to have things they want to buy...ok, many things! As parents, we want to give our children money but, also want to balance that with building responsibility and also ensuring security (has your teen ever lost the cash you gave them?!). Would you consider giving your teen a prepaid card instead of cash? Why or why not?

My granddaughter loves either gift cards or cash. I give gift cards to all childrens functions I go too.
My Son earns all his spending money so there is no need for us to give him one.
I feel young people should learn to handle cash before being handed a piece of plastic. Actually seeing and handling the $'s gradually being spent is a great visual cue. Seeing the cash dwindle may help avert impulse spending, and help teens learn responsible buying/saving habits. While it would be painful to lose cash, it would also be a very valuable lesson in handling money responsibly.
It would be great if I could choose where my teen could shop. Other than that it's great to teach them about spending/budget.
It's a great way to start teaching them about responsible credit card use.
I do not like the idea because the child never has the tangible element. I think the child should see the money and its value instead of a plastic card. They may grow up with credit problems!
My only concern that they are not easy to use at every location
I am not happy with the pre-paid cards. I find that most og them have hidden fee's that are too high.
I would only do this if the gift card did not expire and didn't deduct service fees after a certain amount of time.
I do not like the prepaid cards, becaus so many times you end up with less than $1 on it and it goes to waste. Some stores wont even allow you to use it with that little on it. With cash, I can encourage my kids to put that change into their piggy bank and we save it for the future.
