How are you treated by salespeople when shopping for personal/home electronics?

Salespeople have a range of personalities.  However, women often feel that they are not treated with enough respect by salespeople when purchasing electronics such as TVs, computers, etc.

What has your experience been?  Do you feel that you are treated with respect by electronics salespeople?

Poorly - I'm ignored or patronized (15.5%)

OK - I'm treated alright, but could be better (57.3%)

Well - I'm treated respectfully (27.3%)

I am usually treated fairly, but being a woman I feel I am not being told everything. If I'm not well equipped with the correct questions on the product, the salesperson may feel they can get over on me.

I find that a lot of sales people will ignore me because they don't think that I am going to purchase anything. I have to hunt them down and that becomes aggravating.

My biggest peeve are people with lousy attitudes who work in these type of positions. They act like they hate their jobs and you. If your attitude stinks, try collections over the phone, do not ruin my shopping experience.

My biggest pet peeve is trying to buy camera related goods from big box electronics stores. I'm a photographer and had a situation come up where I NEEDED an extra pro quality camera by that weekend. Heaeded to Best Buy with the intention of picking up the camera and heading out the door. Nope. I was argued with by a pimply 20 yr old boy telling me that I was "buying waaaay too much camera for my needs". How in the world does he know what my needs are? He sat there and tried to tell me I would be just as happy with a point and shoot. I was red with anger. I think as women we generally get treated like our cute little bubble gum filled brains just will never ever understand all the crazy electronic doo hickeys in the big shiny store. (Yes sarcasm.)

i get really annoyed when shopping in this department. my husband and i are very young, we have a good deal of money set aside in the bank, thanks to saving and hard work.. but when they notice how young we are, all they think that we are wasting their time or cant afford the items, they seem to usually not take us serious. we seem to always have issues. except at best buy, they are pretty good, usually.

Sad to say this but it depends on the side of town that I'm on. I remember going in to a Gateway store awhile back. I went in with my mom and brother to look for a computer. There were plenty of sales people available, but not one of them greeted us or asked if we wanted assistance. Ten minutes after we entered the store, two white women walked in (I am Mexican American) and they were greeted right away and asked if they needed assistance. We stayed in the store for a total of 15 minutes and were never approached. We walked out figuring our business was not wanted. Have not been back to that store and told friends and family to steer clear of it.

Last year I went to purchase a new laptop. My husband went with me but had nothing to do with the purchase. The sales guy kept looking at my husband and asking him questions about what he was looking for. Every time my husband would look at me and I would answer the question. Finally after the third time, I told the guy I am the one buying the computer, you will ask the questions to me NOT him. When I finally found a laptop I really liked and was in my price range, the guy started doing his pitch of "you need this and this" when I told him all I wanted was the laptop, no extra software, and I surely was not going to pay them a fee to remove all the crap they added on to it (he said it would take hours to remove ) he looked at my husband once again and said she really needs to get this and this, blah blah blah. I was SO upset I looked at him and said No what I need to do is obviously go to another store to make my purchase, and that is exactly what I did.

It depends on where you are shopping. It does seem that in most stores, the sales people are not very knowledgeable when it comes to electronics. My husband and I always do our research before we go to buy something and we actually end up teaching the sales people a thing or too.

It all depends where I shop.

I love to go an shop for computer components. Most of the younger MALE staff assumes that I know nothing about what I am looking at. I get a good laugh when 9 times out of 10 I know more about the products than they do! lol
