What do you think was the biggest event of 2009?

2009 was a very busy year.  So many things happened, we had trouble deciding which ones to put in this poll!  Along with the passing of Michael Jackson, we said goodbye to Senator Ted Kennedy, Farrah Fawcett and Patrick Swayze.  The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq made headlines throughout the year.

We also had some great triumphs with the inaguration of Barack Obama the first African-American U.S. president; the heroism of U.S. Airways Pilot Captain Sullenberger who landed a plane of 155 people safely on New York’s Hudson River; and the bravery of U.S. Navy snipers who rescued a cargo ship taken hostage by pirates off of Somalia.

What do you think was the biggest story of 2009?

H1N1 virus (swine flu) (14.7%)

Sonia Sotomayor as first Hispanic Supreme Court justice (1.6%)

The passing of Michael Jackson (18.9%)

Healthcare reform (5.1%)

The poor economy and job loss (59.5%)

It has to be the poor economy. My husband has lost his job twice this year and has yet to score even an interview. On top of that his unemployment has run out. I work for the local government and for the first time in history we had to have massive layoffs this year with no wage increase expected for at least 2 years. It appears to be doom and gloom all around with no end in site. I will be happy to see the end of 2009 and only hope that 2010 has better news to bring.

Health care reform is being pushed on us. The only way it can be passed is with the President buying votes. Its a very sad time in our country when most people don't want this new health care bill. Nobody knows whats in it and most politicians never even read the bill. How can they vote on something when they don't know what they are voting on. Very sad!

It has to be the economy, people everywhere are dealing with that in one way or another.

The poor economy was definitely the biggest story of the year. It has affected all of us in one way or another. Hopefully, next year is a better year for all.
