    Depends on the item and the occasion but a thank you when given and a thank you later whether written or emailed is good too. No text. Get personal and make sure it is heartfelt and appreciative.

    Moat of time I have seen, a hand written or even emailed thank you later is unexpected but very appreciated

    As long as their is a thank you I believe it is enough, but a card in the mail is a wonderful surprise.
