Are you or anyone in your household lactose intolerant?

There seem to be so many new Lactose free products on the market.  Every time we go to the supermarket there's something new.  For those of us who are lactose intolerant ,or have a loved one who is, this is music to our ears.

We were curious, are you or anyone in your household lactose intolerant?  Do you have an easy time finding products that you like that are lactose free?

My daughter is lactose intolerant, we just recently discovered it. She seems to be warming up to Lactaid finally. She is really reluctant to try anything else because iit was hard for her to get use to Lactaid.

My son seemed to have lactose issues in preschool and Kindergarten and I bought Lactaid for him only. It did the trick. I thought it tasted just like reg milk. And we mixed it with chocolate syrup so he never complained either. We dont use it now but I would recommend it if someone needed it.

I noticed my lactose intolerance when I was pregnant with my first child. I would become bloated and quite uncomfortable. I thought it meant that the baby would be lactose intolerant but she has a mild allergic reaction to milk products in the form of small bumps. After I gave birth, I continued to have the symptoms when I consumed milk products. My child drinks soy milk and now so do I. It took a little while to get used to the taste, but considering I rarely drink milk plain, it is not so bad. I am hesitant to try lactose free ice creams, yogurts and cheese so when I do crave those foods I just deal with the discomfort. mina77: there are various degrees of intolerance. Some people can eat small amounts of lactose containing products and be fine and others cannot tolerate them at all. I read somewhere that the enzyme that breaks down lactose stops being produced or decreases in the amount produced from age two which may explain why some of us were not always lactose intolerant.

Nobody in my household are LI, but have known a few people who are. I think the products they make for these people are just great! It is a way for them to experience products that they usually wouldn't be able to.

I've tried the lactaid milk and pills and such and I've tried soy milk. Nothing works for me. Guess it's more than lactose that I have a problem with.

My son has been lactose intolerant for years and he also takes an antibiotic every day prophylactically. He drinks Lactaid mik & uses Lactaid pills. The generic versions do not seem to work as well as the real Lactaid pills. He also drinks a product by Lifeway Food called kefir. It is on the order of a thick, drinkable yogurt and has many benefits. Here is something from their site: Kefir is also recommended to restore the intestinal flora of people who are recovering from a serious illness or being treated with antibiotics. It has also been effective for people who can not tolerate dairy products. I have used it to help with yeast infections and in his case, with the antibiotic and lactose problems, it really helps. It helps build your system back up with the "good bacteria" (probiotic). Here is their web address www.lifeway.net. It tastes a little tart at first but is very good and comes in a lot of different flavors.
