What do you think was the biggest event of 2009?

2009 was a very busy year.  So many things happened, we had trouble deciding which ones to put in this poll!  Along with the passing of Michael Jackson, we said goodbye to Senator Ted Kennedy, Farrah Fawcett and Patrick Swayze.  The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq made headlines throughout the year.

We also had some great triumphs with the inaguration of Barack Obama the first African-American U.S. president; the heroism of U.S. Airways Pilot Captain Sullenberger who landed a plane of 155 people safely on New York’s Hudson River; and the bravery of U.S. Navy snipers who rescued a cargo ship taken hostage by pirates off of Somalia.

What do you think was the biggest story of 2009?

H1N1 virus (swine flu) (14.7%)

Sonia Sotomayor as first Hispanic Supreme Court justice (1.6%)

The passing of Michael Jackson (18.9%)

Healthcare reform (5.1%)

The poor economy and job loss (59.5%)

I truly believe that the economic climate is prevalent on everyone's minds. People are striving to maintain their dignity while trying to survive on a lower standard of living. Then there are employers taking advantage of the economy to pay people far less than the position demands, expect so much more from employees, all the while letting them know that everybody is expendable, no job is secure, and every job could be gone tomorrow. Couple the stress with the high level of uninsurance for a vast percentage of America, working or not, and you've got a recipe for disaster. My hopes for 2010 is that employment soars again and our current government can make great strides toward insuring everyone, not just the poor!

What else can be worse for families facing unemployment and foreclosure? My family is lucky that we have jobs and still can afford to dine out of home sometimes. But, we need to prepare for the worse and who knows what would happen tomorrow. I hope all in my heart that everyone has a nice 2010 and we can walk out from the bad economic storm.

I have to say that the loss of so many jobs is the worst part of this year. My family was one of the very unlucky ones my husband and I both lost our jobs but thankfully my husband was able to find a better job so it worked out for us but I know for some it's been horrable and I feel deeply for them.

I chose the poor economy and job loss.Thankfully my family wasn't affected too much so i'm grateful for that blessing. I thought the passing of Michael Jackson was also very sad. I hope 2010 will be a much better year for everyone.

I believe that the economy has had the greatest impact on the most amount of people. I am fortunate that I wasn't affected, but I know so many that are.

The poor economy has dominated the news; it's continued to slide throughout the year despite all efforts in Washington to kick start it, jobs continued to be lost. I don't remember a worst time when people couldn't find jobs and would take any job just to pay bills and keep health insurance.

I don't think any of us will be too sad to leave 2009's problems behind and hope that better economic times are ahead for all of us in 2010.

I too feel the same way as msfriendly. I would have voted for Obama's historical inaguration as being the biggest event of the year had it been a choice. Even though I didn't vote for him I think that his win in aquiring the highest postion in the land has changed America's taperstry of thought and acceptance. Here is to all of us and to a better 2010.

i wish the choices were different, job loss and the economy was on another level than the rest. I think the environment was missed though. Can you say green and all the manufacturers latching on to the next great marketing scheme. We deffinatley DO need to go Green in alot of ways but it was expolioited alot too. ENVIRONMENT and Climate change issues becoming very mainstream was a big part of 2009.
