Advertising budgets have been cut big time. So even if they do try to get women to consume more by targetting their advertising, the total ad and promotion spend has gone down, including research into customer preferences. On the whole, the effect is not that great.

I have been seeing many, many more ads for sales and I find that advertisers are promoting products that consumers actually need or that are "reasonable" splurges. No one seems to be trying to push over-the-top luxury items.

I see many less luxury items aimed at advertised women than before. Such as spas, facials etc....

I think everyone is in a tail spin. I went shopping at a big mall yesterday and several stores had closed. (jewelry stores, high-end clothing, etc) I guess now that you mention it there have been less luxury items like "redoak15" said.

I noticed they have cut down on there spending but it seems there targeting more the woman who can afford the high priced products as well as the tiny tiny woman, where are the ads for the average woman?

I agree as well that advertising budgets are cut big time too, but there are always those jewelery commercials and fancy department store commercials as well. I'm still waiting til there will be some reasonable commercials.

I agree that many commercials and advertisements have been geared more towards women lately. The expensive SUVs, jewelry, massages, etc.

A lot of companies, I believe, are trying to let consumers know they understand money is tight by lowering prices and offering better discounts. I go to the companies website for whatever I want to buy, and even to restaurants I plan to visit, and usually they have a free or percentage off coupon for signing up for their newsletter. I also go to websites that offer samples because when the company sends the sample, they also send a coupon. All in all, I think companies are trying to help consumers, but they can't lower prices so much it hurts their business.
