With Breast Cancer Awareness Month quickly coming to a close, it’s important to think about the healthy things we can do to prevent this disease before it strikes. It’s never a bad idea to eat healthy foods and there are a few in particular that experts believe help to reduce our chances of breast cancer.

A report from Delish focuses on a few of the doctor recommended foods that are considered breast cancer prevention foods that we should all incorporate in our weekly menus. Cofounder of the Pink Lotus Breast Center and board-certified breast surgeon Dr. Kristi Funk shares some of her favorite foods that are healthful and rich in antioxidants as well.

Dr. Funk explains how the foods we eat alter our hormones and inflammation levels, all things that can affect the environment cancer cells live in within a woman’s body. So, if we are consuming the right mix of healthy foods - we can create the least likely environment for cancer cells to grow.

Tops on Dr. Funk’s list of breast cancer prevention foods are leafy greens. Think spinach, kale and collard greens - but also don’t forget the broccoli. Eat them raw or lightly steamed to get the most antioxiadant benefits from these foods.

If you have a sweet tooth, why not throw some berries in the mix. Blueberries, straberries, raspberries, and black berries are very high in antioxidants and encourage what Dr. Funk calls “cancer cell suicide”. Chocolate lovers will be happy to hear that dark chocolate is also on the list of health cancer fighting foods.

Dr. Funk also wants to bust what she calls a myth - that soy milk is bad for you. Since it was shown to raise estrogen levels in animals - many people have stayed away from the dairy alternative. But, several studies since 2009 have shown soy milk can actually protect us from breast cancer. So - drink up and make sure the label lists whole soybeans as a primary ingredient.

Hungry yet? Other foods Dr. Funk includes on her list are apples, beans, tomatoes, green tea and red jasmine rice - so get to munching.

What do you think of these foods touted to lower our risk of breast cancer?
