We’ve all heard debates over which diet is healthiest, will help you live the longest and drop the most pounds. But there’s a new diet you may not yet know about that takes two very popular lifestyle diets and meshes them into one. The Pegan is a mix of both the popular paleo and vegan diets.

Rather than a temporary diet, buth vegan and paleo are more lifestyle eating habits that are supposed to shape your future health in positive ways. USA Today reports about the new Pegan hybrid diet that is beginning to trend with health conscious individuals after best-selling author Dr. Mark Hyman coined the term and shared that this was his new personal diet.

If you need a little refresher - a vegan diet is when you refrain from eating anything that comes from an animal, meaning no meat, dairy, eggs, etc. And a paleo is short for “paleolithic”, meaning dieters try to mimic what humans were eating in an era some 2.5 millions tears ago. This means absolutely no processed foods, focusing on meats, fish, veggies, nuts and berries.

The pegan diet takes both vegan and paleo elements, leaving you with a mostly plant-based diet. Though the paleo diet is often considered to be very meaty, the pegan diet takes out most meats and animal products. It is largely focused on fruits, vegetables and nuts. Dr. Hyman says that 75% of the pegan diet should consist of fruits and vegetable while avoiding gluten and dairy.

And if you can’t do without dairy, the diet says goats and sheep milk is more acceptable and easier to digest than cow’s milk. Dr. Hyman also advises to eat meat extra sparingly and only think of it as a side dish if you eat it at all. Including healthier fats like nuts, avocados and coconut oil is a big part of the pegan diet.

What do you think of the new pegan diet?

Does this sound like something you would try?

Sounds like something I am willing to try. I already eat healthy and avoid process and chemical laden foods. Not trying to lose weight but maintain a healthy body.

Dr. Greger does the hard work for us an gives us the info for free. Whole Food Plant Based is the best way to eat, but not the easiest! I like my comfort junk food.

The diet is what I typically try to do, if I am dieting or eating healthy and has been for a few years. He has not created this diet, just publicized it and coined it with a corny, inaccurate term.

I watched his special on PBS. I'd take aspects of the diet to make positive changes to what I eat but I'm not that rigid to be able to do a specific diet, I like to try new recipes, new spices, new fruits/veg. and cooking techniques.
