The egg photo that will forever live in infamy after getting more ‘likes’ (now holding at over 52 million ‘likes’) than anyone ever in the history of Instagram would like to share more than just social media buzz with the world. That’s right, the egg, who is now referred to as Eugene, has a cause and an important message to share with the world about mental health.
The New York Times reports about the video that was seen after this year’s Super Bowl on Hulu that many had expected to be about a new show dropping. But instead, we saw the famous Instagram egg literally cracking under the “stress of social media”. The egg then goes on to encourage others who are struggling with their mental health to seek help.The ad tells viewers to visit the Mental Health America webiste to learn more.
So, how did the Instagram egg become a campaign symbol for mental health? The creator of the egg photo, Chris Godfrey who works at a London based advertising agency, and a couple of friends decided to use the massive media coverage Eugene received for good.
One friend who is helping Godfrey manage Eugene’s Instagram presence, Alissa Khan-Whelan, shares how we will be seeing more of the egg in coming months. Khan-Whelan explains, “People have fallen in love with this egg, and Eugene the egg wants to continue to spread positive messages.” Mental health is just the first issue Eugene has chosen to tackle, but according to Godfrey and his team we will be seeing this egg spread the word about a variety of important causes in the future.
