Avocado Lovers Have Something New To Savor in Pitless Avocados

There are many expert ways to remove the pit from an avocado, but apparently the one that involves a knife often leads to the use of bandaids or in some cases a trip to the ER. If you’ve ever come close to experiencing what’s being called “avocado hand” then you may want to switch to spooning out the pit or going for the newly available pitless avocado.

Mental Floss reports about the pitless avocados that are being called “cocktail avocados” or “avocaditos” as they are smaller than a regular avocado and almost shaped like a pickle or zuchini. But when opened, the inside is all delicious buttery avocado flesh - no pits or seeds in sight. Another thing that makes these avocados very different from your standard variety is that you can eat the skin as well.

The pitless avocados are grown in Spain and can be found in some specialty markets in the U.S. They are reportedly not genetically modified and actually grow naturally this way when they come from an unpollinated avocado blossom. Their growth is stunted from a lack of seed making them a smaller size, but tastes the same as a regular size pitted avocado. It’s possible that a rise in popularity and the whole “avocado hand” thing will lead more U.S. markets to carry these seedless avocados. But for now, check out your specialty grocery stores and talk to your produce managers if you want to get your hands on one of these pitless delights.

What do you think of the pitless avocado?

Does this sound like something you would like to see at your local supermarket?

I totally agree people are just simply lazy and if this keeps up the value of seeds goes down.

I think I would love these avocaditos, as long as we're getting the real truth about them not being genetically modified. Bring 'em on!

I love things that are natural and for an avocado that is pitless are not real to me, like where is the seed!? I feel like this is a pure form of laziness and unnatural. If you can't simply cut an avocado use Youtube to find ways to cut open an avocado or go to your local Whole Foods or Farmer Market and act someone to show you how. This world has lazy people who want stuff fast and don't enjoy the beauty of life.
